We’ll help you learn to surf
FAQs

Both for safety reasons, and for having the best instruction possible, we only do individual lessons.
That said, if a parent wants to be in the water lending a hand then we can instruct a second student, AND we offer a 25% discount on the second student.

Lessons are 60 minutes. We recommend arriving early to get suited up and stretched out so we can be in the water for as long as possible.
Surfboard and wetsuit rental are included in the lesson cost. Feel free to bring your own if you prefer.
We will focus on the basics to start… identifying a good wave, being in the right position, and transitioning from paddling to standing up.
Safety first. You WILL wipe out a lot, so we will also cover methods for avoiding injury from contact with the water, sand, your board, other surfers, etc. All instructors are Red Cross CPR Certified in case there is an issue.

Probably Max unless he’s booked when you need to go out. While we have a few instructors—all of them Red Cross CPR Certified and veteran surfers—it’s called Uncle Max’s Surf School for a reason… he’s our fearless leader so you’ll probably start with him.
You can read more about Uncle Max in the Meet Max section below.

We hate to say “It depends” but it really does. Do you only surf with the Surf School, or did you buy your own wetsuit and board so you can practice in between lessons? Are you naturally athletic and/or comfortable on skateboards, in a pool, etc., or do you need to build more coordination?
The key is to give it time. Surfing is something you can do for your entire life, so we recommend focusing less on the on-ramp and more about the life-long cruise once you get comfortable.
The point is: Don’t delay. Most of our students say they wish they had started way earlier… if you’re thinking about it, just go for it! Schedule your first few lessons! You’ll be glad you did.

Meet Max
Hi, I’m Max.
Some of my first and best memories involve the ocean. I am a Southern California native, and I have been surfing since I was 10 years old. I served as a lifeguard for many years, and played multiple seasons on competitive swimming and international water polo teams.
There’s nothing like riding a wave. I started this surf school because one of my greatest passions is seeing people develop in a fun and safe environment, and to come to love surfing as much as I do. Surfing changed my life and is something I’ll do forever, and I enjoy seeing other people catch the bug as well.
Why do I go by “Uncle Max”? My nieces and nephews call me Uncle Max (makes sense), and then their friends started calling me Uncle Max, and then students overheard and started calling me Uncle Max, too. I knew it was official when parents and grandparents of students were referring to me as Uncle Max.
